I’m going to demonstrate the proper way to install a forward-facing safety seat. When your child gets a bit older they need a seat that protects them and keeps them comfortable in the car. A forward-facing safety seat is the best way to make sure that your child is safe when they are riding in any vehicle. To begin read the owner’s manual for both the vehicle and safety seat to understand the proper placement in the vehicle and the proper placement of harnesses to hold the child in the safety seat. According to the manufacturer’s instructions the harness straps should come out of the harness slots located at or above the child’s shoulders. The harness strap should be snug against the child so that no harness material can be gathered into a pinch or fold the retainer clip should be located at the child’s armpit level.
How to Ensure the Child Safety
Next determine if the safety seat and vehicle are equipped with latch lower anchors and tethers for children. Determine the desired placement within the vehicle use either the lower anchors or seat belt system to install the safety seat .If using the lower anchors route through the appropriate belt path and make sure they are properly attached to the vehicle’s anchor system. Firmly grab the safety seat by the belt path and try to move the seat left to right. You should not be able to move the safety seat more than one inch from left to right or front to back. If your safety seat has a tether be sure to identify the correct anchor position in the vehicle and the proper route attach the tether to the anchor position.
Adjustment of the Car Seat
Snug up the tether strap some vehicles may need to be retrofitted with a tether anchor if this is the case contact the vehicle dealer for more information. If using the vehicle safety belt system pass the belt through the indicated belt path on the safety seat. If using a belt system with the shoulder belt make sure to convert the seat belt retractor to a locking retractor by slowly pulling the belt all of the way out. Slowly releasing the belt using your hand or knee press down on the safety seat thereby removing as much air as possible from the vehicle’s seat cushion. Snug up on the belt as tightly as possible firmly grab the safety seat by the belt path and try to move the seat left to right you should not be able to move the safety seat more than one inch from left to right or front to back.
If your safety seat has a tether be sure to identify the correct anchor position in the vehicle and the proper route. Attach the tether to the anchor position and snug up the tether strap some vehicles may need to be retrofitted with a tether anchor. If this is the case contact the vehicle dealer for more information periodically check your safety seat to ensure it is still tightly secured to the vehicle seat. Children should not wear bulky clothing or have anything including blankets behind the child or under the safety seat harness.
